Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What can you tell me about yourself?
A. You seldom have a better opportunity to sell yourself, so begin with the phrase, "One of the things I am proud of is. . ." Mention your skills and background and why they make you an ideal candidate for the position you are interviewing for. Measure your accomplishments in facts, dollars, and numbers.

Q. What type of position are you interested in?
A. If you don't have your heart set on a specific position, then tell the interviewer what you do best. "I'm good at keeping track of supplies. I work well with people and would like a position relating to office management." If you have a specific job opening in mind, say so, but add that you would consider other openings that offer future promotional opportunities.

Q. Where do you want to be five years from now?
A.

Three good responses would be, "Where could I be with your company?" "What programs do you have?" or "In the same company, but with additional responsibilities."

Q. Are you willing to transfer?
A. You cannot predict the future. Always say, "Yes, I" am open to transfer opportunities."

Q. What are your strengths?
A.

Think up at least three examples. They should be job related, such as "I am flexible. I am organized. I am good with details." Be prepared to substantiate your strengths with specific illustrations.

Q. What are your weaknesses?
A. Again, formulate at least three examples ahead of time. These should not be job related, and never volunteer anything truly negative. Instead, name strengths and disguise them as weaknesses. For example, "I tend to get really involved at work and think about it at home. I'm too hard on myself when I make mistakes."

Q. What would you do if...?
A.

Your solution to whatever problem posed by the interviewer is not nearly as important as maintaining a positive attitude. Be inventive enough to have several possible choices.

Q. Why do you want to work for our company?
A.

Respond with one or two personal statements related to the company, such as "I like working with creative people and I have a commitment to a marketing environment." Respond with an answer appropriate for the job description.
